De Amerikaanse Liz Ortecho is een medisch onderzoeker. Op een dag keert ze terug naar haar geboorteplaats Roswell, in de staat New Mexico. Hier komt Liz weer in contact met haar oude jeugdliefde Max, die tegenwoordig agent is bij de plaatselijke politie. Al snel blijkt Max een groot geheim te hebben. In werkelijkheid is hij namelijk een buitenaards wezen met bijzondere krachten. Na deze onthulling besluit Liz hem te helpen. Samen gaan ze op zoek naar meer informatie over zijn ware afkomst. De aanwezigheid van aliens op aarde wekt de interesse van de Amerikaanse autoriteiten.
